Poem 06
The Quiet Gold
Morning, unannounced, and a day that asks for slowness.
Morning does not announce itself.
It simply gilds the rim of things:
the spoon, the unopened letter,
the dust that learned to dance.
I drink the quiet like tea
gone slightly sweet.
A thrush rehearses one phrase
until the air agrees.
Today will ask for nothing
I cannot give it slowly—
a little gold at the edges,
and time enough to notice.
